At Avicenna, our goal for our students goes beyond short-term success in a particular subject or exam. We aim to imbue the young people we teach with a mature approach towards learning, a rigorous academic toolkit and the confidence to embrace and enjoy every milestone in their education.
We focus on tutoring 7+, 8+, 10+, 11+, 13+ and all GCSE and A Level subjects. With over 10 years' experience tutoring students from a range of educational backgrounds, from the ages of 5 up to A-Level, we offer tutoring that focuses on everything from building subject-specific skill sets and confidence to preparing for highly competitive private school entrance exams, tailoring each experience to the individual needs of each student. Recent tutees of ours have been admitted to: St Paul's Boys, Harrow, Dulwich College, Wycombe Abbey, Francis Holland (Sloane Square), Harrodian, Pembridge Hall and Westminster.
Born in Iran but brought to London at the age of two, there was always a strong emphasis on the importance of education within my family. Brought up across two cultures, two languages and two countries, doing well at school was always an anchor for me, where the joy of learning something interesting and becoming adept at the skills I was being taught helped me to make sense of my divergent worlds. This inner strength and stability that come from learning well and the confidence that comes with intelligence is something I want all children to have. I won a scholarship to attend St Paul's Girls' Schools at sixth form and went on to read Mathematics at Edinburgh University. I studied creative writing for a year after graduating to explore my passion for poetry.
A father of three, I grew up in London, attending Westminster Under School and later St. Paul's School on an academic scholarship. I hold a B.Sc. in Economics and M.Sc. in Finance. During my 15-year career in financial markets as a trader and portfolio manager, I maintained a keen interest in education, mentoring younger colleagues and regularly conducting seminars for clients and colleagues on financial mathematics and economics. I am a great believer in differentiation and understand that each child learns in a unique way. I employ varied and personalised teaching styles to cater to each individual pupil, whether they thrive in structured or unstructured environments, prefer deductive or inductive learning methods or feel more comfortable with abstract concepts or real-world contexts.
It has been a complete pleasure to engage Team Avicenna for my son's 11+ preparation. From the first meeting with the lead tutor where he understood the options we were looking out for our son, to the final congratulatory sign off, it felt like a partnership and a warm camaraderie.
Tony and his team of very able tutors helped in each and every aspect of exam preparation.
Tony's outstanding writing workshops were particularly instrumental in developing my son's technical writing skills and boosting his confidence in creative writing – a crucial component of most entrance exams.
We also benefited greatly from Vishna's maths and problem solving sessions, as well as Jules' insightful interview preparation.
What sets apart Avicenna in this space of tutoring is the attention they give for bespoke sessions, prompt responsiveness to messages and unwavering support. They are always there to cheer you on, hear your worries, give solutions, and take your child through the finishing line.

I am thrilled to share our experience with the creative and persuasive writing workshops that my son attended with Tony.
Not only did he enhance his technical writing skills, but he also gained confidence in expressing his thoughts and ideas on paper. The workshops provided a supportive environment and encouraged his creativity to flourish, allowing him to experiment with different writing styles and genres.
Since creative writing is such a large part of the entrance exam process, we have no doubt that these sessions armed him with what he needed. We are incredibly proud of his achievements and believe these workshops played a pivotal role in his success. Thank you for fostering such an enriching experience!

We were fast approaching the start of 11+ exam period when we discovered some important gaps in our daughter's readiness for her English papers. Avicenna provided us with an ideal tutor at short notice and Tony was full of useful tips on how to approach specific exam questions.
Bella, the English tutor, was really good - our daughter liked her instantly and picked up important techniques fast, particularly about how to structure her writing.
At very short notice, Avicenna managed to squeeze in several sessions before the exam, and our daughter went from being overwhelmed and anxious about certain questions to more confident in her approach, using the simple to remember Avicenna tools.
She passed her exams, and has continued to use the skills she learned in her normal classwork too, earning praise from teachers.
We would recommend Avicenna to other parents who want their children to be well prepared for their 11+.

Joss came to us from Avicenna Advisors to help get our son ready for the 11+ exams. We focused primarily on English as my son believed he was not good at the subject and was not interested in reading.
We could see improvements in our son from working with Joss immediately. Joss was able to relate to our son chatting about their week, playing football and following the Premier League.
He was very patient, explaining to my son what he needed to look out for when answering comprehension questions and also how to write plans for creative writing. He also explained why you needed more than one worded answers on questions.
I would happily recommend Joss for future tutoring: his manner, patience and ability to explain to a 10-year old what they need to look out for when answering these questions was astounding.
